introduction
This center was established in FY2016 by a coalition of three research institutes – the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine at Hiroshima University, the Atomic Bomb Disease Institute at Nagasaki University, and the Fukushima Global Medical Science Center at Fukushima Medical University –
to respond to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident within an academic framework, to establish an academic foundation for advanced and integrated radiation disaster and medical science research, and to offer the results of the research to the residents of the country and the international community.
The center received continued accreditation beyond FY2022 and began its second term of project.
This center jointly launches an open call for research projects to promote collaborative research of radiation effect and related sciences.

①Research category
From FY2025, “Projects responding to Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident 5: Radiation disaster and social safety management” was newly established.
Applications are available for the following programs;

Joint research based on original ideas of the applicant(s) that utilizes the facilities, equipment and materials of the center and is aimed at the comprehensive development of radiation disaster medical science.

②Application Requirements
The program is open to researchers and graduate students✦1✦2) who are affiliated with an accredited university or research institution as of April 1, 2025, or have obtained such affiliation or have demonstrably equivalent status.
✦1) Graduate students are required to indicate the name of your academic advisor (the person in charge of your laboratory) on the application form.
✦2) Graduate students must already belong to the laboratory listed on the application form as a regular course student at the time of application.
(Expected admission is not acceptable.)
*Researchers who belong to the three research institutes – the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine at Hiroshima University, the Atomic Bomb Disease Institute at Nagasaki University or the Fukushima Global Medical Science Center at Fukushima Medical University – are not qualified to apply this program.

April 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026
④Application Method
In order to ensure the most effective research activities, applicants must confer with a resident researcher (professor, associate professor, lecturer or assistant professor) at this center and receive appropriate guidance before completing and submitting the ‘Application for the Joint Usage/Research Center for Radiation Disaster Medical Science’ using the online application form below.
Please register as a new user on My Page and obtain a login ID on the “Network-type Joint Usage/Research Center for Radiation Disaster Medical Science” application form.
After logging in to the “My Page” with the obtained ID, complete the application form and submit it through the online system.
★Please submit up to four applications per laboratory.
(From the fifth case onward, please apply for the details of the open-topic project (no research funding allocation).
★Please refrain from submitting multiple applications for similar research themes from the same laboratory.
★When submitting a new proposal, please make sure that it is not similar to a completed or ongoing proposal.

⑤Deadline
Monday, December 2, 2024.
Submissions may be accepted even after the deadline.
⑥Adoption judgement
Following deliberation by the Joint Research Project Screening committee, the steering committee of the Research Center for Radiation Disaster Medical Science will render a final decision on applications, and the head of the center will notify all applicants of decisions before the start of any research.
After the adoption of a research project, the name/affiliation of the project representative and the project name will be disclosed on our website.
Research Projects receiving grants will also be notified of the grant allotment at the time of decision.
Note: For those projects selected that wish to share the use of equipment, devices, etc., please contact the research institution responsible for the management of the equipment in question.
Note: Usage of facilities and equipment may require separate filings, workshops, and study sessions before experimentation or analysis can begin.
⑦Joint research funds, including travel expenses
For joint research proposals submitted for Projects responding to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident or Other important projects, and pursuant to deliberation by the Joint Research Project Screening committee and final decision by the steering committee, joint research funds (including travel expenses for the research) will be allocated (FY2024 results up to 200,000 Japanese Yen).
Applications to Open-topic projects and those submitted after the deadline will not be eligible for a grant.
⑧Regarding various change procedures
If the applicant makes changes concerning the resident researcher(s) because of unavoidable circumstances after starting the joint research, approval of the resident researcher should be obtained and logging in to the “My Page” with the obtained ID, should be please fill out the all kinds of change from and submit it through the online system.
⑨Withdrawal after adoption decision
If the applicant decides to withdraw because of unavoidable circumstances after the adoption decision, approval of the resident researcher should be obtained. After logging in to the ‘My Page’ with the obtained ID, please fill out the withdrawal form and submit it through the online system.
If joint research funds are allocated, the balance shall be returned.
In addition, in case of withdrawal after the start of research, in principle, the results report should be submitted.
⑩Report of research results
Following the completion of the research period, the status of the research shall be submitted in the form of a Report of Results by a representative of the research group or a resident researcher. Details on what the report should include will be announced separately. The Report of Results is slated for publication in FY2026.
⑪Publication of joint research
When publishing the results of joint research performed at this center, researchers will indicate in an Acknowledgement as bellows;
“This work was supported by the Program of the Network-type Joint Usage/Research Center for Radiation Disaster Medical Science.”
⑫Intellectual property rights
The vesting of all intellectual property rights produced through joint research at this center shall be determined following discussion with the affiliated organizations.
⑬Compliance with research ethics
In carrying out joint research, researchers must comply with the laws and regulations of the countries concerned and strive to implement projects in a fair and efficient manner.
In particular, researchers must take measures to prevent illegal acts, abuse, and fraudulent receipt.
Therefore, joint researchers are obliged to complete a research ethics training program as follows:
(1) Completion of research ethics training program prescribed by the affiliated organization; and
(2) If the affiliated organization does not specify the training program for research ethics, completion of that prescribed by the research base organization to which the representative resident researcher belongs.
⑭Accommodation Facilities
Applicants seeking to utilize Hiroshima University or Nagasaki University accommodation facilities for joint research should inquire with these organizations.
⑮Miscellaneous
With regard to the use of research facilities, strictly observe all rules and regulations in each research institute of the Joint Usage/Research Center.
