Timeline of the Establishment and Overview of the Organaization
The Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine at Hiroshima University, the Atomic Bomb Disease Institute at Nagasaki University, and the Fukushima Global Medical Science Center at Fukushima Medical University have been certified as the network-type Joint Usage/Research Center for Radiation Disaster Medical Science in order to respond to demands for scientific studies brought about by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster.
On February 17, 2016, Hiroshima University, Nagasaki University, and Fukushima Medical University concluded an agreement regarding the establishment, operation, and other aspects of the Research Center for Radiation Disaster Medical Science. The Headquarters for the Center was jointly established by the three universities and located in the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine at Hiroshima University. The Director of the Center’s Headquarters (Head of the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine at Hiroshima University) and the Deputy Director of the Center’s Headquarters (Heads of the Atomic Bomb Disease Institute at Nagasaki University and the Fukushima Global Medical Science Center at Fukushima Medical University) are stationed at the Center’s Headquarters. Nine professors (including two recommended by each of the research institutions) form the Center Headquarters Council and deliberate on important matters relating to the basic policies of the Center and other aspects of the operation of the Center. The Steering Committee is formed of seven external committee members and six from within the Center. In consultation with the Director of the Center, it deliberates on matters relating to planning for the Center, budgeting, research planning, joint research, joint use, and other aspects of operation. The Joint Research Theme Review Section is formed of seven external members and six from within the Center. It solicits and selects joint research themes and deliberates on matters relating to promotion of joint research. (Joint Research Theme Review Section Bylaws)
In addition, sections for international symposiums, public relations and assessments have been established. (International Symposium Section Bylaws, Public Relations Section Bylaws, and Assessment Section Bylaws)
The Secretariat for the Center’s headquarters has been established in the Kasumi Campus Management Support Office at Hiroshima University. (Internal Operational Regulations). It manages the administrative work for the various entities, including the Center Headquarters Council, Steering Committee, and Joint Research Theme Review Section.
